Shoes, bags and accessories that finish an outfit

Choose the details that work for your plans, your clothes and your comfort.

The finishing pieces can change how an outfit feels, but they should also help you through the day. A pair of shoes you can walk in, a bag that holds what you need and one personal detail often do more than a collection of matching extras.

Let your plans guide the accessories

Think about the whole day before reaching for accessories. Will you walk to a meeting, carry a laptop, spend time outdoors or stand through a celebration? Those details help you choose shoes and a bag before deciding on jewelry or a scarf.

For work, a dependable bag and comfortable shoes may be the most valuable pieces. Our office wear guide shows how to build the clothes around a real workday. For an event, our occasion outfit guide starts with the setting and the length of the celebration.

Let shoes support the day

Try shoes on with the outfit and walk in them. Check the fit at the toes and heel, the sole underfoot and whether the hem sits well above the shoe. A low heel, flat, boot or sandal can all look considered when the choice suits the place and the amount of walking.

If you love a dress but the shoes make it difficult to wear, try a different pair before changing the dress. Our dress guide offers more ways to give one piece another life.

Choose a bag for its job

A daily bag should hold the things you actually carry without becoming uncomfortable. Look at its weight, strap length, pockets and closure. A smaller bag can be useful for an evening out, but it still needs room for the essentials. You do not have to match it exactly to your shoes; a shared tone or material can be enough.

Add one detail you enjoy

A scarf, earrings or belt can bring color, texture or shape to simple clothing. If the outfit already has a strong print or embellished fabric, try one quieter accessory and see how it feels. If the clothes are plain, a distinctive detail can take more attention. There is no fixed number of accessories to wear.

Lay the full outfit out, then remove anything that competes with the piece you want people to notice. Wear it for a few minutes at home. Can you move freely, carry the bag easily and forget about adjusting the accessories? That is a good sign.

Keep the pieces in rotation

Store shoes and bags so they keep their shape, clean them according to their materials and mend small faults early. The most useful accessories are the ones you enjoy wearing again with different outfits.
