Smart casual outfits for men, without the guesswork

Simple outfit combinations for dinners, relaxed offices and weekends.

Smart casual sits between a suit and your most relaxed weekend clothes. The tricky part is reading the room: a jacket can feel right at dinner and too formal at a barbecue. You can change the mood of one familiar outfit without replacing everything.

Three smart casual outfits with jackets, trousers and knitwear

Read the invitation, then choose the anchor

For a client lunch or a restaurant with a dress code, begin with tailored trousers or an unstructured jacket. At a friend's gathering, dark jeans and a fine knit may be enough. If you are unsure, ask the host or look at the venue before choosing. A dress code describes the setting; it does not require every guest to look identical.

One pair of trousers, three plans

Take navy chinos as an example. With a plain shirt, loafers and a jacket, they can work for a relaxed office. Swap the jacket for a polo and the loafers for clean sneakers for a weekend lunch. In the evening, a dark knit and leather shoes make the same trousers feel more intentional. Changing a single layer or pair of shoes often does more than adding several accessories.

At the other end, a traditional suit may still be the better choice for a formal event. If the invitation says business formal, do not try to stretch a casual outfit into that role. Our accessories guide looks closely at shoes, belts and the smaller details when they matter.

Keep an easy version ready

Save a combination you have actually worn and liked. Hang its pieces together or take a photo. The next time plans arrive late, you can adjust that proven outfit for the weather instead of starting from scratch. Our capsule wardrobe guide helps you build a few such combinations; the summer and winter guides show how to adapt them through the year.
